Go Fish! featuring Tom Chapin & Friends

Join us on Saturday, October 17th for fishing and family fun. 

CATCH-AND-RELEASE FISHING 10am-2pm
Join BPCPC’s Master Anglers and drop a line for some of the 30-plus species of fish that live in New York Bay (the Hudson River’s estuary). During Go Fish!, barbless hooks minimize injuries to both fish and participants. fish are placed in saltwater tanks for observation and identification before being released back into the Hudson. Live demonstrations and displays teach fish anatomy and heighten awareness of the ecology, flourishing marine life and current state of good health of the Hudson River and its estuary. Rods, reels and bait are provided for those who don’t bring their own. 

ART PROJECTS 11am-2pm
Drop in on fish-related art projects. 

BIRD WATCHING 11am
Search with an experienced birder for species that live in or migrate through BPC Parks. Binoculars available to borrow. 

FAMILY PERFORMANCE 12pm
Tom Chapin & Friends, along with special guests, The Chapin Sisters, play original and traditional folk favorites.

Bird Watching

The parks of Battery Park City provide a habitat for many types of birds and feature excellent spots for both the casual visitor to catch a glimpse of wildlife and for more serious Birdwatchers to add to their life lists. Join a birder/naturalist to explore the parks and to experience the varieties of wildlife that live hidden in plain view. Novice birders welcome. Binoculars and field guides available.

On October 3 at 11 am join Art Historian, Dorothea Basile for a look at Tony Cragg’s gargantuan bronze sculptures of musical instruments patterned with waves. Then create your own fanciful musical instruments with our artists/educators. All materials are provided. Meet at Wagner Park.

Family Art Tour & Workshop: Make a Volcano!

Explore the ideas within the dramatic rock formations in Teardrop Park on this day of creative family fun. Learn how the geology of planet Earth inspired artist Ann Hamilton who created the park’s sculpted rock formations. Volcanologist, Dr. Patricia Nadeau from the American Museum of Natural History, will tell the story of how our planet’s tectonic activity creates earthquakes and volcanoes and can literally move mountains! Make your own mini volcano to take home and join in as all the participants work to create a big volcano that will actually erupt through the chemistry of baking soda and vinegar! All materials are provided. Free!

Turtle Day

Meet the turtles from the and learn about these amazing animals from one their knowledgeable naturalists. Turtles evolved 200 million years ago, before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes, and even lizards.  They have remained relatively unchanged since.  Naturalists from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will present and discuss these remarkable creatures. Children and adults can learn about the habitats, evolution, and behavior of each species. Plus there will be live turtles on hand.  Audience members will have a chance to handle real turtle shells and skulls from a variety of different species, including the infamous snapping turtle.

In addition, Battery Park City Parks’ Go Fish! event will be happening concurrently at Wagner Park with a day of catch-and-release fishing, bird watching, live theater, and art projects.

Make Sundays your day for family swimming! Parents and kids can free-swim together all year round  in our indoor half-Olympic sized pool! Bring your own towel, lock and swim cap and we’ll provide you with a fun array of pool toys, noodles and floaties.

Free for members. If you’re not a Community Center Member yet, Day Passes are available for only $15 for adults and $10 for youth, students and seniors.
