Storytelling – humankind’s oldest art form – aims to teach as well as entertain both young and old. Come enjoy sitting on Teardrop Park’s green grass while listening to singer, storyteller, activist, and educator Therese Folkes Plair. Therese Folkes Plair retells the dream that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. told the world in 1963, and other stories.
Therese Folkes Plair performs stories and music that celebrates the oral and written literature of people of African descent. Through dramatic retelling, she will bring alive excerpts from Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King’s history-making “I Have A Dream” speech from 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. for families on August 16th. Hear about a visionary man’s dream of a world where King’s own children and all children “would be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.” Experience how a dream of racial harmony and equal rights for all people became the dream of a nation.
Following the stories, participants will have the materials to make their own book of dreams to take home. Appropriate for ages 5 and older.
